The name Ecuador came from the country's location since it straddles the equator. Fifteen million people live in this country where Spanish is the official language. The capital is Quito, a city known for having some of the best preserved historical sites in Latin America. Ecuador's diverse geography includes the Andes mountains where Cotopaxi sits, one of the highest active volcanos in the world. The Galapagos Islands which are home to an incredible variety of plant and animal species, are also a part of Ecuador.
