I have been part of Moms in Prayer International in Uganda for several years. Recently, I was given the opportunity to attend the 10th Anniversary Celebration in Nigeria where I prayed with coordinators from Kenya, Ghana and Tanzania. I also met Fern Nichols and Marlae Gritter for the first time.
God has given us incredible testimonies to share from this past year, starting with the moms who moved from Northern Uganda to Kampala after their husbands were killed in the Gulu war. Even though their lives are difficult and they live in a camp on the outskirts of the city, they are faithful to meet every week in their prayer group. One of the local pastor's wives travels to the camp to lead these precious moms in praying for their children.
Another widowed mom in my area shared a testimony about her teenage daughter who attended high school while she struggled to pay her tuition. Since most of our high schools in Uganda are boarding schools, the mother had to send the daughter some distance away. During the girl's last year of school, her mom went to visit her only to find that she had left school and was living with a man. When the mom heard about Moms in Prayer, she joined a group and after some time the girl came back home and accepted the Lord. Now she has finished school, is working and also helping with her siblings.
This next testimony has to do with a younger girl. Her mother joined one of our prayer groups when her daughter was 7 years old. At the time, she was a very difficult child. She would sometimes cry all day, refuse to go to school and scream if anyone touched her. At Sunday school, she caused problems for the entire class. During family prayer time, instead of bowing her head, she would do other things to annoy her parents. After her mom prayed for two years in a group, this girl is a changed child. She is well behaved in class and cooperative in Sunday school. The best part is, she is now the one who reads scripture during family time!
Finally, there was a boy who was 15 years old when l visited his town to teach mothers to pray for their children and schools. He joined a gang that would rob people in the community. His mother was the church caretaker and very embarrassed of her son, who was in and out of prison. Neighbors wondered why she attended church and spoke about the goodness of God when they didn’t see any sign of this in her family. The mother eventually gave up, told her son to move out, and said she no longer cared what happened to the boy. Then she heard about the local Moms in Prayer group and started praying for her son. After only one month, she sent me a message amazed that her son had come back home, started attending church and asked the Lord into his heart!
We praise God who is faithful to answer prayers for our children and schools in Uganda!
