Telling the Moms in Prayer Story in Sudan
By Terri Flynn, Leader in California
There are over 750,000 Toposa people in Southern Sudan. The Toposa people work very hard. The women and their daughters work in the garden every day harvesting sorghum, and the men and the young boys take care of the cattle and goats. God gave me the privilege of sharing the Word of God and prayer with these precious people. They are oral learners who are eager to hear about God, so our team told Bible stories from a story cloth with forty two pictures displayed on it. The stories began with creation, the people of Israel, then the birth, death and resurrection of Christ, His life and ministry and lastly, the ascension.
In the afternoons, we taught the women how to pray using stories to share the Four Steps of Prayer. Praying scriptures over the children was challenging since we didn’t use prayer sheets, Bibles or notes, but God worked through us and helped the women understand the importance of this time. Prayer gives them hope amidst many challenges in Southern Sudan such as alcoholism, polygamy and health issues like malaria and scorpion bites. The women were encouraged to go out and find another mom to pray with. One of the moms who attended three out of the five days, agreed to start a Moms in Prayer group!
Two pastors joined us from Kenya. One of them was Pastor Erick who has a church congregation of several hundred people. I gave him a Leader's Guide for his wife and reference to the website. He was very excited to bring this news back to Kenya, stressing that there is a crucial need for prayer there. When I returned home to the U.S., I received an email from Pastor Erick's wife stating, "We are so excited about what God is doing here in Kenya. It was easy to plan this meeting because many schools are starting up again today. God has shown great favor to us. Over forty mums gathered in our church compound to pray for their school-going children. It was very good. We have followed closely how the prayer sheet works: praise, confessing of sins, thanksgiving, intercessions."
Praise the Lord for this time with the precious Toposa people, the pastors from Kenya and Pastor Erick's wife who has already started Moms in Prayer in her church! Please pray for peace in Sudan and that God will increase the faith of the Toposa and Kenyan mothers. Ask that the Lord will gather more moms to pray so that groups will spring up in every village.
